ARTIST STATEMENT

With a background in oil and acrylic painting, Jim seeks to create a surreal, dream-like atmosphere in his photographs that inspire the viewer’s imagination. Influenced by French Impressionism and musicians of that era, he vies to translate and conglomerate his visual and auditory inspiration into a photograph. Much like the Impressionists, he is interested in capturing the effects of transient light and passing colours in his images. His work features panoramic photographs of vast landscapes in both Ontario, Québec, and the southwestern US. Many of his photos are taken by the roadside in effort to make noticed again the often ignored landscapes that are passed by in haste each day while commuting.

BACKGROUND

Jim originally studied photography and video/film at Seneca College in Toronto. He began with an apprenticeship in product photography but later changed career paths to the pre-press and graphic design industry. In recent years, his passion for photography has been rekindled and now devotes most of his time toward artistic endeavors.

METHOD
All photographs are digitally enhanced – not manipulated. For example, no skies are added in, no trees taken out, etc. All the scenes are exactly as they appear in nature, however, they are digitally enhanced; in other words, colour saturation is boosted and colour correction applied in order to overcome limitations of the camera. Dodging and burning are applied in the same manner as traditional darkroom processing in film photography. Panoramic shots are composed of multiple photos which are digitally attached side-by-side, or “stitched” together in order to create one long photo. Photographs are also shot using various lens filters (including infrared).

COMMISSIONED WORK

Commissioned by the National Capital Commission to do a series of photos for Gatineau Park for a semi-permanent museum installation at the Gatineau Park Visitor Centre.
